Professor William Strunk: Cool Dude
William Strunk was a man of strong opinions. He was old-fashioned -- he taught and wrote in the 1920s. He probably would have detested blogs. Too much risk of people going on and on with lots of blather and sloppy thinking with no one to do quality control. He wouldn't be wrong. But he lived in a different age with different standards and ways of thinking about the production of text.
Nevertheless, Strunk's writing counsel in his famous style book edited by E.B. White is sound. Some things don't change, and the vast majority of what Professor Strunk has to say about the essentials of good writing is evergreen. We will find a few things here and there that are outmoded, but, by and large, we will live this semester with Dr. S. on our desks as we write.
